Wonder Woman is a 2019 superhero action film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film is set in World War II, mainly taking place in the Pacific battles between the United States and Japan.
On the faraway land of Paradise Island, the Amazons have prepared endlessly for the potential threat of Ares returning to conquer the world. When U.S. Air Force pilot Steve Trevor crashes onto the island, Diana and her friend, Mala, rescue the fallen plane. When brought to Diana's mother, Queen Hippolyta, Steve tells the Amazons of the war raging in the outside world. Aphrodite makes an appearance, convincing Hippolyta to hold a contest that will determine a single Amazon warrior who will leave the island and fight in the war. While initially, Diana intends on entering, she is forbidden from doing so by her mother. Mala enters, and Diana decides to enter with a disguise. After defeating all other warriors in the tournament, Diana reveals herself to her mother and Hippolyta is left with no choice but to let her daughter leave. Steve and Diana return to the United States, where Steve is given a mission in the Pacific Islands. Steve and Diana complete the mission, and along the way, Diana discovers that the Japanese soldiers are led by Deimos and Phobos, Ares' sons. She also learns of the United States' plan to drop their nuclear weapons in Japan, and does her best to convince the States to not drop the bombs. Her argument, of course, being that Ares is the true mastermind behind the war. The United States doesn't listen, and Steve is forced to help Diana stop the bombs while she sets out to find Ares. In the end, the warhead doesn't actually drop on Japan. Ares, however, is responsible for the deaths of millions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Wonder Woman and Ares have one final battle on the island of Okinawa.
